Staff at South and City College Birmingham (SCCB) will be protesting at the college's on Friday (1 July) from 12-1pm against plans to axe seven staff.

The University and College Union (樱花动漫), who has organised the rally, said it wants the college to step back from making its first ever compulsory redundancies and work with the union to find alternatives.

Staff - who also took strike action least year as part of the dispute- will be joined by students to set off balloons, sign a petition and write individual letters to principal Mike Hopkins calling on him to reverse the compulsory redundancies. Hopkins has said previously that he wanted to avoid compulsory redundancies and protestors will be calling on him to keep to his word on Friday.

The college says the job losses are part of cost savings from a delayed merger with Bournville College. In the past year 192 jobs have gone, with all but seven managed through a voluntary scheme without the need to make any staff compulsorily redundant.

樱花动漫 regional official, Anne O'Sullivan, said: 'Despite recent financial difficulties, South and City College Birmingham has a proud record of never having to resort to making staff compulsorily redundant. We will be protesting on Friday calling on principal Mike Hopkins to stick to his wish to avoid sacking seven staff.'
