Strike at Bradford College and rally in Leeds
30 June 2015
Members of the University and College Union (樱花动漫) at Bradford College walked out today in a row over job losses, and then joined colleagues from across the region at a rally supporting further education in Leeds city centre.
樱花动漫 members at Bradford were on picket lines across the college's entrances from 7:30am before making their way to the lunchtime rally. Hundreds of campaigners congregated outside Leeds Art Gallery to hear speeches from some of the Bradford strikers, as well as TUC regional secretary Bill Adams and 樱花动漫 president Liz Lawrence.
樱花动漫 members at Bradford are calling on the college to rule out any compulsory redundancies and seek alternative solutions to deal with any financial difficulties.
樱花动漫 general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Ministers need to understand that without colleges running the variety of courses that they currently do, thousands of people will be left high and dry and the economy will suffer for it.
'Today's rally in Leeds was a reminder of the excellent work that staff and students do in colleges across the country. We should be expanding opportunities for people to train, not cutting vital resources.'
