Strike action off and dispute over at University College London

13 May 2010

樱花动漫 announced today that strike action planned for Tuesday 18 May at University College London (UCL) is off. At a general meeting this afternoon, 樱花动漫 members voted to cancel the action and the union's dispute with the university is now over.

The union hailed the decision as a victory for common sense, for academic freedom, for staff and for students. 樱花动漫 said that although it was delighted to have defeated plans for a redundancy committee and to have halted compulsory redundancies, it would be monitoring progress at UCL.

Sean Wallis, branch secretary of UCL 樱花动漫, said: 'This is a victory for common sense, for academic freedom, for staff and for students. Most of all it is a victory due to all our members who supported their union in our campaign to stop the cuts."

樱花动漫 general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UCL tried to set a precedent and show that it was prepared to sack academic staff. Our defence of education has forced the institution to back down from making good that threat. We are very pleased with the outcome and that the situation was resolved without the need to take industrial action. Other colleges and universities should learn from what happened at UCL.'
