Unions force University of Surrey to halt outsourcing plans
21 July 2025
樱花动漫, together with the other campus unions Unite and Unison, today hailed its victory in forcing the University of Surrey to abandon plans to outsource all new professional services roles.
University management had threatened to employ all new professional services staff through its subsidiary company, Operate Surrey, from the start of last month (June 2025) on inferior terms and conditions, including worse pensions, sick pay, leave and pay progression. Those few employees on existing Operate Surrey contracts will now have their pay harmonised with those employed directly by the university and receive enhanced annual leave and sick pay.
Surrey 樱花动漫 entered into a formal trade dispute with the university over the plans, which would have further led to a two-tier workforce, and a petition that has gathered over 1,000 signatures. They also lobbied local MP Al Pinkerton and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.
樱花动漫 general secretary Jo Grady said: 'This is a huge victory for our members who have resolutely opposed Surrey's imposition of a two-tier workforce, as well as for current and future students who rely on the support professional services staff provide.
'The changes would have forced new hires into accepting worse terms and conditions and worse pensions than their peers. We are glad Surrey management has decided to listen to our members and halt these detrimental plans.'
